Huat Kuih is a traditional Chinese steamed cake. “Huat” means prosperity in Hokkien language and “Kuih” is a malay word means cake. Therefore it is a prosperity cake! Chinese always like to relate food to good meaning wording. This is to hope that after consumed that food it would bring good luck. That is why “Huat Kuih” is most commonly consumes during the Chinese New Year.

Huat Kuih” is very simple to make. Only five ingredients are required, plain flour, sugar, coconut milk, egg and fruit salt. It is usually dyed in different colour. Pink colour and chocolate colour are very common. So, today I will share with you the recipe to make the “Huat Kuih”. Make sure you make one for the Chinese New Year and let’s “Huat” together!

Huat Kuih Recipe

This recipe makes one medium size Huat Kuih.

Ingredients:
  1. 150 grams plain flour
  2. 140 grams castor sugar
  3. 200 ml coconut milk (divided into 2 bowls 100 ml each)
  4. 1 teaspoon fruit salt (ENO)
  5. 1 egg
  6. 2 drops of pink food colouring

Methods:

  1. Mix 100 ml coconut milk and egg in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a sauce pan, heat the remaining 100 ml coconut milk with castor sugar at low heat until sugar dissolved. Set it aside to cool.
  3. When the mixture cool down, add plain flour in 2 additions and mix well.
  4. Gradually add in egg mixture and mix well.
  5. Add fruit salt and mix well.
  6. Pour the batter into a medium size bowl or cup. Steam for about 30 minutes or until cook.

Notes:

  1. If you use a small bowl or cup, you may cut down the time for steaming to 15 to 20 minutes.
